I revisit my high school days, remembering some faces and discarding a few bad memories. Did I think beyond SPM then? I was so ambitious and I have always wanted to travel the world. Being 18, I was ready to leave my homeland.
What made me wanting to study? Was it to change my stars? Was it because I wanted my freedom? I have drilled in my mind that I want to be better..far better than my parents and a lot better than my peers. It was easy because the target was clear – an American Mission.
The truth is high school was not totally fun. One must excel in studies, be accepted and be surrounded by 1001 rules. Many would attract attention. Many wanted to be ‘cool’ and ‘gorgeous’ and ‘dangerous.’ That’s why parenting demands for solutions to many many problems. Parents must be open-minded and hands-on. The latest gadgets, friends, gossips, trends, games, movies, songs, idols etc mould and influence the teenagers. So, parents must always be one step behind to support the children in good and bad times. We’ll help them make wise decisions and take responsibilities. We’ll mend their broken hearts. We’ll hug and forgive them.
