Go Figure

June 13, 2009

“I can use my power,” cried Ajib. We are playing with 2 action hero figures. Parenting involves creativity and a little imagination. We’ll see if the children can be a narrator or hands-on person.  I guess parents should not act as adults all the time. Act crazy, bend the rules, and toot toot play the human train…

I used to observe Liya with her dolls. She could write an entire storyboard but meeting with strangers, it’s not her superb area. She’s artistic and full of ideas. Thanks to being observant and quite meticulous. She’s also persistent and that’s a quality that excel her as a young reader. Liya loves reading..sorta a junior bookworm.

Ajib carries books as much as he likes to pack his figurines.

All-rounder Mama

Mom Does It All

Mom Does It All

One should not ask what a Mama can do for her child/children. A modern Mama is not only drives the kids around (to/fro school, ballet class, music class, tuition, birthday parties, etc.) but she is also expected to cook, bake, sew, does artwork, read, write and so on.

In my case, my Liya and Ajib love reading story books, drawing and colouring. Liya in particular loves doing the jigsaw puzzles. I am now polishing my sketching skills and mostly I must brush my patience. You know, kids always ask us to read at odd times while we have a ladle in our hands or while we are typing business proposals.

Parenting is more on participative side rather than authoritative. Parenting is not by watching the children to do things but we are actively involved in reading and drawing.

For now, I am teaching Liya to differentiate a statement and a dialogue when reading. This makes reading livelier and more fun.

The 4-eyed Lass

November 28, 2008

It was horrible, seeing myself in front of the mirror. Although it wasn’t Grandma-typed glasses, it was still nothing fancy for a 12-year old. I truly understand what Bubbles (blond hair, blue uniform, Power Puff Girls)  went through the first day must wear her prescribed spectacles.

Tips for parents: If both parents are wearing corrective lenses, then it is easier to persuade your children. Otherwise, parents must use the softer approach like a reward or a tell tale story.

See practical examples on how to approach your children below:

  1. Your daughter can’t read her favourite book because her eyes can’t see clearly now.
  2. Your son may miss kicking the football to score a goal
  3. Your daughter may play different notes when playing the piano
  4. Your son may mistake a motorbicycle for a bicycle while crossing the road
