Origami Time

March 29, 2009

The whole family was trying origami, the art of paper folding. I wonder how the Japanese could be really artistic and passionate about origami.

I managed to do a hat and a swan. Liya and Ajib did their very best too. I failed to do a star but I was willing to try again later.

Daddy tried his luck. He folded a one-sided green colour paper. Liya was so happy to see a parrot. Ajib was glad to touch a rabbit.

Inventing Art or Investing Talent

December 6, 2008

‘Daddy, you are so smart,” cried Liya when she saw my husband was making a paper boat. Ajib has already worn the paper hat daddy made earlier. Liya added the paper waves.

“I need paper to make a frog,” Liya said. This year at the kindergarten, she learned origami and liked it so much. Ajib is picking up the skills and interests. “Glue, Daddy,” this time Ajib put up some requests to add on to their ‘mini art workshop.’

Our weekend activities with the kids can be so simple – paper folding, cycling, kite flying, and ‘horsey’ riding. Costs to us: none or very minimal. Quality time: Definite!

Sharing moments with children may not be time consuming or expensive. Children long for an active participation from the parents. Spare your critics parents or grandparents!!! The other day I had a chat with a kindergarten owner. We discussed on how to ‘see’ a child’s artwork. What we see as scribbling may mean the ‘world’ in a child’s mind. Drawing or painting is a form of expression. Understanding the children are far more important than our insulting or insensitive remarks.  Who knows we might just raise  a “Monet,” “Renoir”, or a “Van Gogh” in our very home.
